On the Insert tab, select Page Number, and then choose the location and style you want. If you don't want a page number to appear on the first page, select Different First Page. If you want numbering to start with 1 on the second page, go to Page Number > Format Page Numbers, and set Start at to 0.
In the Field names list, select Page, and then select OK. Go to Header & Footer > Page Number > Format Page Numbers, select the format you want, and then select OK.
If all page numbers are deleted, go to Insert > Header & Footer and select Other Pages on the left side. Go to Insert > Page Number and choose a number placement.
By default, Word numbers every line in a document (except those in tables, footnotes, endnotes, text boxes, and headers and footers). However, you can choose which line numbers to display.
Select the page number layout option you want. Word for the web will add the total page count to each page of your document in a Page X of Y format, such as Page 3 of 10.
In the Field names list, select Page, and then select OK. Go to Header & Footer > Page Number > Format Page Numbers, select the format you want, and then select OK.
The list of what's available depends on the type of item (heading, page number, etc.) you're linking to. In the Insert reference to box, select the information you want inserted in the document.
